Chapter Thirty-Three

K eeping his gaze on Breckin, Mason reminded himself to stay calm, remembering his very short trip to France had never been a good thing.

Blinking, Breck said in a quiet tone, “I never knew you came to Paris.”

“I know.”

With a tilt to her head, her brows pinched. “You said I’d been there for two months when you came.”

“That’s right.”

“But you didn’t come to see me?”

“I did.”

“I don’t understand. If you did, why didn’t I see you?”

“You were busy.”

“Mason, you are confusing me. You came all that way, and then what?” She shook her head, frowning. “Whatever I was doing wasn’t as important as seeing you. I don’t get it. You should have interrupted me.”

Heat zipped up his chest. “No. I couldn’t have.”

“Why not? What in the world was I doing?”

“Kissing Daniel Arquette.”

Breckin’s mouth parted, then those unshed tears that had been swimming in her eyes spilled over in a torrent of weaving lines down her cheeks. “What?”

“You were kissing Daniel Arquette outside of his fancy apartment building, too busy to see me just a few feet away.”

“No!” Turning, she went out the door, running for the lake, Mason going after her, stopping her when he put his arms around her waist and pulled her back to his chest.

Breck's body gave—a dead weight.

Carefully, he picked her up, as she sobbed into his shoulder, and carried her back to the Expedition. This time, both of them went into the back seat where they could have more room, and he could hold her.

“Mase, I never—” More body racking sobs shook her, vibrating into him. “I-I…I’m sorry!”

Allowing her to cry because he knew she needed to, Mason held her until she started to settle some.

“I can only imagine what you thought of me,” she said. “I…”

More tears.

Unable to take it any longer, Mason placed his mouth against her ear and whispered, “Shh…don't cry anymore.”

“I thin-think that’s im-impossible.”

“I hate it when you cry,” he said, placing a kiss on the top of her head.

“You must hate me.”

“I think I did,” he confessed, “but only for a little while.”

“I thought you were with Krystin. I thought you were done with me before I ever left, then when I heard what I heard about you two being together, I broke.”

“I still don’t get how you could believe I would hurt you by hooking up with Krystin. The two of us never officially called it quits.”

“The two of us were hardly speaking. We didn’t even go to the Sweethearts dance or our senior prom.”

“Because you didn’t want to go, Breck. At least that’s what you told me.”

“But you went to the prom and were with Krystin at the after-party.”

Mason palmed his forehead. “I went to prom with the guys. Jake and Maggie were having one of their famous breakup moments. Gage was doing his usual loan wolf thing, and Phillip’s date got the flu or something. So, Gage suggested we all show up for a while, then hit the after-party early. Which we did.”

“But you danced with her,” Breckin said.
